Lookout Mountain Treasures
Lookout Mountain is located on the southern end of the Appalachians bordering Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia. Its breathtaking vista includes hundreds of streams, waterfalls and creeks. Mountain temperatures provide a cool tantalizing environment dissolving the heat of cities.
Lookout Mountain is also home to the Little River Canyon National Park and one of the nation’s purest waterways, traversing nearly the entire breadth of the mountain at its apex. It is the only river in this hemisphere to run along the top of a mountain, flowing eighty-three miles to the DeSoto Falls, in DeSoto State Park. (Note: Little River is nearby, but not a part of Hidden Lake.)
Nearby, experience quality of life in the heart of Mentone, AL. In Mentone, you will find some of the most delightfully friendly people who strive to preserve their town’s classic historic charm. Unique shops and restaurants, quaint and comfortable lodging, camps, retreats, ski and golf are all part of the beauty of Mentone.
Within the 93 miles of Lookout Mountain Parkway, you’ll find waterfalls, canyons, scenic brow vistas, unique towns and villages, state and national parks and preserves and many more natural wonders. It is also home to the extravaganza, The World’s Longest Yard Sale that takes place in the month of August where over 4,000 yard sale vendors line the Lookout Mountain Parkway and the US 127 Corridor for some 450-miles of bargains.
Dekalb County has unforgettable memories awaiting you. Launch a kayak or canoe into one of Little River’s forks to explore its paths and natural beauty. Plan a white-water rafting trip on the Little River Canyon, hike through the state parks or preserves or enjoy some of the best warm water fly fishing in the Southeast. For the less adventurous type, bike through forested paths that lead to hidden waterfalls or just pack a lunch, good book and camera and find peace in many of our community’s treasures.
